The Department of Analytical Chemistry of the Ural Polytechnic Institute was founded by the laboratories of qualitative and quantitative analysis, originally part of the Ural State University, organized by decree of V.I. Lenin in 1920. The laboratory of qualitative analysis was first headed by N.А. Bushkov, and then by Dr. A.B. Levin from 1920 to 1924, and the honored worker of science, prof. V.I. Petrashen.
The laboratories of quantitative and technical analysis were headed by associate professors Bogdanovich, A.V. Kharitonov, E.M. Snopova, I.I. Rotkov and N.M. Kets. Scientists of these laboratories were engaged mainly in educational and methodical work. The Department of Analytical Chemistry as a whole was organized only in 1933-34. It was headed by Assoc. Prof. A. B. Levin from 1934 to 1938.
Prof. N. Tananaev, who was invited to Sverdlovsk in 1938 to manage this department, introduced a great revival in the work of the Department of Analytical Chemistry of the Ural Polytechnic Institute. During his work at Ural Polytechnic Institute (UPI), Professor N.Tananaev rewrote and reissued the textbooks “Weight Analysis”, “Volumetric Analysis”, “Drop Analysis” and “Theoretical Foundations of Analytical Chemistry”, rewrote and published “Fractional Analysis”, “Stripped Method”. Under the guidance of N. A. Tananaev, 34 PhD theses were completed and defended at the Department of Analytical Chemistry.
V.N. Podchaynova, Prof. Doctor of Chemistry, was the head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry from 1960 to 1977. The main scientific direction of the department at that time was research in the field of analytical chemistry of color, rare and trace elements. The basis of the research was the study of the chemistry of the reactions of these groups of elements with organic reagents.
Since 1961, new physical and chemical methods have been systematically introduced into the educational and research work of the department: spectral, photometric, polarographic, potentiometric, ion-exchange chromatography and others.
Senior lecturers have successfully worked at the department for many years: G.A. Medvedeva, R.F. Khovyakova, D.Ts. Tkachev. V.I. Murashova, A.N. Chechneva, V.K. Kuznetsova, A.N. Tananaeva, V.I. Kocherov, A.V. Severgin, L.I. Bakunin.
For many years, prof. E.M. Yakimets has been developing a new version of the titrimetric method (the trilonomic determination of a number of elements).
The department was headed by prof. Yu.M. Polezhaev from 1977 to 2000, by prof. A.I. Matern from 2000 to 2019, and by A.N. Kozitsina since 2019 to present time.
In 2011, the Department of Analytical Chemistry became a graduate school. Students were enrolled in the newly-opened Master’s programs in two areas: Chemical technology (profile "Electrochemical methods and sensors for monitoring the environment and biological objects") and Chemistry (profile "Instrumental methods of research in the pharmaceutical industry"). Today, these profiles correspond to two trajectories of educational programs: “Chemical technology of electronics materials, sensory analytics and inorganic substances” and “Medical and pharmaceutical chemistry”.
In 2015, the Department laucnhed the bachelor's program trajectory “Instrumental methods of analysis of natural and technical objects”, “Chemical technology of inorganic, organic substances, natural energy carriers and drugs”.
