In 1923, a graduate of Moscow University, Professor N. N. Rogatkin together with Professor I.Ya. Postovsky organized the department of dry wood distillation as a part of the Faculty of Chemical Technology of the Ural State University (now the Ural Federal University). Subsequently, the department was called chemical distillation of wood from 1924 to 1928, and from 1928 to 1948 - pyrogenic processes. Later, the department was entrusted with the task of producing specialists in the technology of artificial liquid fuel, technology of electrodes and electric carbon products, in addition to coke chemistry. In connection with the development of new specializations in 1948, the department was renamed the Department of chemical technology of fuel. In 1987, the department received the right to train engineers for environmental protection and rational use of natural resources and changed its name to the Department of Chemical Technology of Fuel and Industrial Ecology.
The chair was headed by: Professor N. N. Rogatkin (1923–1944), Professor K.I. Syskov (1944–1947), Professor M.V. Goftman (1947–1967), Professor GD Kharlampovich (1967–1997), associate professor MG Shishov (1997–2008), associate professor S.G. Staheev (since 2008).
The department has a branch in JSC "Eastern Research Coal Chemistry Institute" (VUHIN). Its laboratory base is used in the educational process and research. A number of leading experts of the institute "VUHIN" are part-time teachers of the department.
The All-Russian Ecological Camp on Lake Peschanoy is organized annually, with the participation of staff and students of the department.
